Candida albicans is a yeast (a type of fungus) that naturally lives in the body to aid in the breakdown and absorption of foods. However when overgrowth occurs, it can cause symptoms of fatigue, sugar cravings, brain fog, skin problems, recurrent fungal infections, and digestive disturbances among many other symptoms.
If left unchecked, the overgrowth of candida can eventually break down the lining on the intestines and release toxic byproducts, creating leaky gut syndrome. Overgrowth can occur due to frequent antibiotic use, auto-immune conditions, oral-contraceptives, and diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates just to name a few. Identification of yeast overgrowth is the first step to repairing the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and restoring balance.
